Top 5 things to do in and around Moalboal Cebu

1. Canyoning at Alegria - the canyoning experience starting in Alegria and finishing in Badian after passing through the famous Kawasan waterfalls is becoming world famous after several recent high profile tv documentaries beamed to audiences worldwide. Conquer a fear of heights jumping from heights of up to 23m into crystal clear water and continue your journey on floating down the Kanalob river.

2. Oslob Whaleshark interaction - the whaleshark viewing place in Oslob on the Southern tip of Cebu is becoming renowned for the guaranteed opportunity to swim with several Whalesharks at once. Surrounded in controversy due to the constant feeding of a diet of usually small shrimp to entice the animals to return day after day. Recently the Miss Universe contestants were filmed swimming with the Whalesharks, as polarizing as it is to peoples opinions it is one of the few sites in the world where swimming with these magnificent animals is all but guaranteed.

Lazada Philippines

3. Sardine Run - either diving or snorkelling, the sardine school based permanently in Moalboal really put the town on the map, the size of the scool numbering in the millions is one of the few places in the world where such a spectacle can be enjoyed and probably the only site in the world where the Sardines are in residence 365 days a year. The school starts as shallow as 1m going down to depths of 30m plus making it suitable for both Scuba Divers and Snorkellers alike.

4. Pescador Island - Situated in the Tanon straight, Pescador Island offer two fantastic dive sites, the Cathedral Cave a vertical swim through chimney starting at 30m and ending at 21m, this dive site is surrounded by overhanging rock formations where large pelagic fish like to hang out. The opposite side of this small rocky island offers a sloping wall down to 30m, covered in a plethora of hard and soft corals with an abundance of giant frogfish hiding out amongst the sponges. Pescador is also great for island hoppers and snorkeller alike.

5. Swim with Turtles - all along the reef an abundance of Green and Hawksbill Sea Turtles can be found, recent environmental laws with hefty fines for anyone caught catching a sea turtle have helped the population recover. It is possible to see up to 15 turtles on a single snorkelling excursion.

Highly recommended - stay at the Blue Orchid Resort, nestled in a quiet spot at the end of Whitebeach, this small oasis resort has an on site, dive centre, swimming pool and offers daily excursions to all these top attractions. For booking visit http://www.blueorchidresort.com

Explore your accommodation choices when you travel with the kids

If you love traveling you might prefer to enjoy the experience alone. But there are times when traveling with the kids is amazing. The trouble is that you need to take extra care when selecting your accommodation. It may depend on the ages of the children or the budget you have when traveling with more people. Of course, your accommodation may be the main part of your whole vacation experience!

You might stay in an ice hotel as part of your visit to the Northern Lights in Sweden. Can you imagine the delight for your kids if they’re big fans of Disney’s Frozen? Or maybe your kids would prefer climbing and sleeping in the trees of the forests of Kent, England? They can delight at the thought of a fancy treehouse forming part of their vacation.

City breaks with the kids offer you the chance to explore museums, art galleries, theaters and more. They can be very handy when there is something on their school curriculum about the history of the area. To save money on city center accommodation you might choose a vacation rental of a studio or apartment. It can be quite helpful to choose self-catering accommodation if you have special dietary needs or you’re traveling with a baby.

Look! Space Wars inspired suite room at Victoria Court Hotel

Victoria Court signage
Victoria Court signage

It was an epic experience during the launching of Victoria Court’s Space Wars thematic suite room at their branch in Canley Street, Pasig City last June 9, 2016.  A party celebration has been held for selected guests and celebrities who attended this event with a sci-fi experience of their newest room.

The room was upstairs the garage, and I was surprised when a Stormtrooper armed with his blaster greeted us at the entry way of the automatic blast door.
I was totally in amazement with delight when I saw the full view of the room at the doorway, it seems I was transported in Space Wars galaxy, everything from ceiling, walls and flooring are intergalactic in design.  It was even more surrealistic when I keep hearing that Tan tan tan tan tan sound ...  the theme song of Star Wars .. with matching smoke coming from somewhere.

What’s inside Space Wars Suite Room?

VC Space Wars intergalactic view at glass windows

Windows with a space view

Look at that! It seems you're out of this world with those sparkling stars and galaxies at those windows.  I can't help imagining things seeing objects from the galaxy.

Infinity Floor

A custom designed infinity floor to relive epic laser sword battles and for taking amazing photos and videos.  It is made of glass and I felt a little bit dizzy looking on the floor because it seems I will get drown in the abyss, you see I only put one foot on that floor to take photo of the infinity floor.

This is their jacuzzi, located just beside the bedroom.

Interactive Spaceship Cockpit

This area is the best part of the room that I like best, because for the first time I was able to fly a spaceship in my imagination.  I really got carried away with the whole theme inside the room.  This cockpit is moving using those controls on the dashboard, with light switches and has sound effects as well.

Bedroom with galaxy views at Space Wars theme room at Victoria Court

The bed is so comfortable and so inviting to lie down and relax while gazing on the stars.  The bedroom was cold and dim, has wall hung TV and toilet.

Costumes and gadgets

There are readily available costume like that brown robe, Darth Vader mask and several weapons displayed on the wall and the laser sword for a complete sci-fi experience.

Space Wars Food Menu

My amazement with Space Wars inside the room hasn't stop there, they also offered us guests with their Space Wars inspired menu options creatively prepared by their chefs such as the Dark Side Burger, Imperial Pasta, Trooper Onigiri, Space Wars Wrap, Panatrooper, and cocktails called Jar Jar Drinks.

The whole experience during Victoria Court Hotel Space Wars launching was truly unique and amazing, truly an out of this world experience!

Food Review: Marites Homestay and Restaurant in Pagudpud

Where to eat in Pagudpud?

A budget friendly restaurant in Pagudpud that serves authentic Ilocano food and other Filipino dishes.

Nipa Hut design Restaurant at Blue Lagoon Pagudpud
Marites Homestay and Restaurant

What better way to experience a local destination is also to experience the taste of its authentic local dishes.  We were fortunate enough when we stayed in Marites Homestay because we didn’t have to worry about where to eat and what to eat, as Marites Homestay and Restaurant serve a variety of dish offerings on their menu.

From the time we checked-in until our checkout, we were served grandly with their kind service and generous servings of food, that each platter of food could serve up to three persons for a budget friendly cost.

Pancit Canton at Marites Homestay and Restaurant in PagudpudPancit Bihon Guisado at Marites Homestay and Restaurant in Pagudpud

Our first taste of their menu was when we were served with a heavy snack, Pancit canton for me and my daughter’s friend and Pancit bihon for my daughter.  Although I was not that hungry, I managed to finish eating the serving on my plate because I love the taste, it has the taste of Pinoy Pancit Canton that I like, the tasty soy sauce that lingers on my taste buds and the variety of vegetables mixed with the noodles.

Complete meal menu - Sinigang na Isda, Garlic Shrimp, Fried Pork, Pinakbet, Inihaw na Pusit and Rice

With dim light and cool fresh air in the dining area, our dinner was served hot, fresh from the cooking area as I can see smoke coming from the food even when the light is dim.  We were served with a plate of mountain full of rice, Sinigang na Isda, Inihaw na Pusit, Buttered shrimp, Chopped Fried Pork, Pinakbet and fresh Water Melon for dessert.

Sinigang na isda menu at Marites Homestay and Restaurant in Pagudpud
Sinigang na Isda

The fish kinda look new to me which they call in Ilocano Tirtir, the fish meat is white and soft.  Instead of Sampaloc which we are used to sour our Sinigang, they use Calamansi.

Inihaw na Pusit menu at Marites Homestay and Restaurant in Pagudpud
Inihaw na Pusit
The squid is perfectly grilled with its meat soft and chewy inside.
Buttered Shrimp menu at Marites Homestay and Restaurant in Pagudpud
Buttered Shrimp
We three say in unison that this was our favorite menu in our dinner.  The sweet and spicy taste is oh so delectable to the taste, we didn’t leave any single shrimp uneaten on our platter, except of course its shells.

Fried Pork menu at Marites Homestay and Restaurant in Pagudpud
Fried Pork
The breading is thin and crispy and the taste is good enough, there’s no need to dip in the catsup to taste, but the fatty portion is bigger than the lean meat that’s why we consumed half of the serving.

Pinakbet menu at Marites Homestay and Restaurant in Pagudpud
If you haven’t tried Ilocano Pakbet, this is it, this is the authentic Ilocano Pakbet with sautéed eggplant, okra, bitter gourd, tomatoes and fermented fish or anchovy sauce that brings out the salty taste.
Breakfast meal - Longsilog at Marites Homestay and Restaurant in Pagudpud

The next morning we were served with a healthy Pinoy breakfast, a platter with complete meal, rice, longanisa, steamed vegetable, fresh vegetable and Sukang Iloco with fresh garlic for dipping. What I like about their longanisa is it’s salty and spicy taste which really match the tangy flavor of Sukang Iloco.

Inihaw na isda, Dinengdeng and Sisig meal at Marites Homestay and Restaurant in Pagudpud

It was our farewell meal in Pagudpud and we really ensured that we will gonna eat plenty to endure the long travel back to Manila. We had Inihaw na Isda, again I’m not familiar with this fish which they call Sungayan.  To complement this dry dish, we had Dinengdeng, it also has fermented fish sauce as base just like Pakbet, but the vegetables in this dish are different.  It can be mixed with camote and malungay vegetables. Our bonus meal is the Pork Sisig, served hot on the metal plate with fresh egg on top.

Those are some of Ilocano dishes Marites Homestay & Restaurant offers they also have Poqui Poqui, Dinakdakan to name a few.  If you are in Pagudpud for a beach getaway, do visit them in Blue Lagoon, Pagudpud and try one of their Ilocano dishes.

You can check out their facebook page for more information on their newest menu.

Bringing Thai Cuisine Back Home With You

One of the things that people miss the most when they come back home after a long vacation is the food. Trying out the dishes of a new country is one of the most underappreciated elements of any vacation. But the people who really want to take in the culture of a new place will dig right in.

There are many countries out there than offer amazing and unique food and drink. Many of the best ones are imported as delicacies and restaurant niches. Mexican, Chinese, Italian - we’re all familiar with them because we can try them out without flying to another country. But it’s always much better when you go to the country itself and try the food right there in its homeland. And there are few places in which this is truer than in Thailand.

A vacation in Thailand is seen as one of the most exotic and luxurious getaways you can embark on. And though we have a lot of Thai cuisine outlets in this country, it’s simply not as widespread as many others. But it’s easily one of the finest foreign menu exports we have.

When you’re back from a Thailand vacation, you may not feel much like celebrating. But why not take what you learned about food and drink in Thailand and share it with your friends? You should consider throwing a dinner party. Let them see the culture that you soaked in while you were on your amazing vacation.

The environment

Thai cuisine, like many great Asian cuisines, lends itself to a very particular and striking aesthetic. If you want to go all-out on a Thailand dinner party, you should consider decorating with a color scheme in mind. The best mix to go for is red, gold, black.

If you want to take it to the next level, you should consider bringing in a low table. You’ll remember that the furniture in Thailand was also minimal. Tables are often close to the floor and the seating comprised simply of cushions.

The main courses

Thai cuisine is so varied that it can be hard to decide on what main course to serve. You could, of course, do some brainstorming and come up with a selection from which your guests could select before they arrive.

But you should think back to all the great dishes you enjoyed in Thailand. What dishes did you enjoy the most? Which ones made you wish your friends had been there to try it out? Try cooking up a mix of all those dishes. You could make a buffet to make sure your friends get to try a bit of everything! And don’t forget to consider the popular condiments for Asean cuisines.

People don’t often talk about the amazing desserts that Thai cuisine has to offer. Hopefully, you tried a bunch of amazing ones on your vacation. But a few people miss out because they stuff themselves too full of the main courses to order dessert!

Fruit and sticky rice are popular ingredients of many Thai desserts. There is also Pok Pok (ice cream sandwhich) to consider, though that’s also a popular dessert here at home!

Summer getaway at Marites Homestay Blue Lagoon in Pagudpud

Just before summer comes to its close, I had an opportunity to visit Pagudpud for a weekend getaway with my daughter and her friend. This is the second time I visited Pagudpud, the first time was in 2013, when we had our Three day tour of Ilocos, and Pagudpud was just part of a day tour in our three day itinerary so we didn’t enjoy much the beach.  And so this time, I planned on beach bumming in Pagudpud.

Staying in Marites Homestay and Restaurant Blue Lagoon

As a busy mom, an overnight stay with me beside the beach would just be enough for me to relax and unwind from my busy daily schedule. I wasn’t looking for any fancy things in a place to stay just a homey ambiance, peaceful and quiet.

It wasn’t difficult for us to locate Marites Homestay Blue Lagoon in Balaois, Pagudpud, fortunately the drivers who took us there knew their establishment.  From the van driver of Laoag to Pagudpud bound and the tricycle driver who directly brought us to Marites Homestay.

At around 2 p.m. we arrived at our destination.  While unloading from our tricycle Mrs. Marites Ubasa, the owner of the Homestay, greeted us warmly and I was surprised that she was already there anticipating our arrival.  Her crew was very quick to assist us in carrying our backpacks to lead us to our room.

Interior of the room

The room was already cold with the air conditioning unit was already turned on.  There are two large beds in the room, just perfect for the three of us.  I occupied the smaller one beside the window and the bigger one for my daughter and her friend. The room has the basic things we need for an overnight stay, a comfortable bed with pillows and blankets, comfort room with a water supply and toilet, table with chairs, roll of tissue and a soap.  The room is quite big, it could still accommodate closet cabinet or vanity cabinet for those who wanted to stay for a longer period of days.  Wi-Fi and television are available at the restaurant which is steps away from the rooms.  Absence of those two in our room is not an issue for me, it was actually good as I was able to take a nap in the afternoon and an early night’s sleep, I was able to read a few pages of the book I took with me.  And not to mention, of course, the beach is located in front, with the nice view of blue green water, vast white sand shoreline, that swimming and enjoying the cool water definitely took most of my time soaking in the water.

Nipa Hut Design Rooms

Each room has Nipa hut style exterior design, using dried Cogon grass roofing, wooden structures and bamboo pole wall cladding.  Their restaurant and dining areas have also the same Filipino design structure which would appeal to foreigners and locals who wants a taste of provincial style abode.

Restaurant & Dining Area

Aside from offering rooms for rent, they also have a restaurant that is 24 hours open to cater to diners. They serve snacks and meals, they also offer “paluto” style food order, Ilocano dishes and other Filipino food. The owners are genuine Ilocanos so you will be assured that you can taste in their restaurant an authentic Ilocano dish like Dinengdeng, Pakbet, Poqui Poqui, Dinakdakan, to name a few.

Other Services offered by Marites Homestay & Restaurant

They have a mini store at the entrance of the restaurant, souvenir shop at the parking area and they are the first to offer in Pagudpud the 4 x 4 ride, a mountain trail seaside adventure. Cottage rental near the beach.
